...by Leroy Hutson. Now that's a real jam. Been listening to that and it makes me get kinda misty-eyed because sometimes I forget... And what's one of your all-time favorite soul tracks?

"Queen of My Soul" by the Average White Band (from their 1976 album Soul Searching) is among my all-time favorite "soul" tracks (can't beat that - SOUL in the song AND album titles)! It combines so many elements of soul. Lyrically, it's a tribute to music itself while musically it mixes elements of Brazilian and Afro-Cuban music with American Jazz and Funk. Great ensemble playing, lead vocals by Hamish Stuart, a sax solo by Malcolm "Molly" Duncan and the dual percussion of drummer Steve Ferrone and guest Carlos Martin on congas make for 5+ minutes of classic soul.

"Ain't Understanding Mellow". To me that is a perfect blend of a great song and two incredible performances by Jerry Butler and Brenda Lee Eager. The way the song builds to the climax and then the tag with the background vocals is definitive classic soul.
